Supreme Commander |
 |
I’ve witnessed the passing of many RTS games through my life. It started many years ago with the original Dune, a humble RPG\RTS that did great justice to the Frank Herbert novel. I’ve been a fan of the genre ever since and played through most major games that came out during that time. With each passing generation, the signs of evolution were very visible — the genre in itself began to borrow from other styles of play. The original Armor Commander was a great example of how the genre had evolved, and similarly, Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War changed the concepts of economy and brought tactical play into the mix.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (PSP) |
 |
The PlayStation Portable launched, had its share of the spotlight, and has been on the decline ever since... while its rival (the Nintendo DS) suckered the non-gamer\retro-gamer\faggot for its success. And for all this time, I've expected Hideo Kojima to bring the Metal Gear series to the hand-held system. Metal Gear fans couldn’t help but ask for more when Metal Gear Acid was announced for the PSP (and though we're all gullible as fuck, MGS based card games don't really win us over). The wait is finally over with the coming of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (MGSPO).

GunZ |
 |
Most of us like the matrix-styled games, since we're all gullible enough to think that a man in a black suit is cool. And if you’re one of the One and also like online gameplay (read: terrible online gameplay) — Gunz is a game you shouldn’t miss. For the rest of you though, this is strictly optional.

World of WarCraft |
 |
You'll find a number of MMORPGs out there with pretty much the same objective — make an invulnerable character, conquer every aspect of the game, own Player vs Player (PVP) sessions, and flirt with the limited women. However, after a period of time, this becomes monotonous (except for the flirting, of course), as these games lack in quests and variety in environments. Take Ragnarok Online for example — there aren’t any quests to keep the experience (XP) coming. You have to rely heavily on slaying monsters to gain experience. This gets annoying as each monster you slay will give you around 0.01% XP as you reach higher levels. After enduring such pain, it’s easy to see why Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft (WOW) was so widely anticipated. Take my word for it, this does not disappoint one bit.

Viva Piñata (X360) |
 |
My first judgement on this game was “gay”. Anybody who sees this game for the first time will agree (especially if you swing the other way). But if you can handle the pink, you begin to respect the idea. Viva Piñata looks like a kids game, and probably is — kids are instantly attracted to it due to vibrant colours and the cute Piñatas. However, appearances as we very well know are deceptive. There’s much more to the game than colours, cuties and amazing graphics. This game requires careful planning and strategy to become an expert gardener (sigh, you read it right).

F.E.A.R. |
 |
F.E.A.R (FEAR) — sounds rather cool, doesn’t it? FEAR is the name of a special response team named First Encounter Assault Recon, the mother of all misnomers — how can you possibly assault first and then ask for recon? But keep your logic aside and come along I take you on a uber-cool, stylish ride that is the experience of FEAR. Straight off, FEAR is the closest thing to feeling like a total bad-ass who eats lead for breakfast and poops out grenades. I was pining for FEAR ever since the SKOAR! DVDs featured it. The combat experience is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The graphics have you spellbound and immersed in the game atmosphere in no time. As soon as you get the hang of the weird head bob effect and slow motion pointing there’s practically no limit to what you can do in a firefight

Running With Vince And Steve |
 |
SKOAR! Magazine is proud to present an interview with Vince Desi — CEO , and Steve Wik — Lead Designer , part of the psychotic team at Running With Scissors . As developers of the POSTAL series, these guys need no introduction. Let’s get down to eliciting the whackiest responses you’ll read this side of a ricocheting Boomerang Machete .
How did you come up with the name “Running With Scissors”?
Vince Desi (VD): We’re different than your usual game developer, and I wanted something that made you think and laugh. Humour is a major part of what RWS is all about.
Steve Wik (SW): We were looking for something that eloquently summarized everything your mother ever told you not to do when you were a kid.

A Day In Gaming Heaven |
 |
Anyone who’s known multiplayer gaming in India will probably have played the ultra-famous Half-Life mod, Counter-Strike. Did we say India? Well, frankly speaking it’s mostly in Bombay, Madras and other metros. Hyderabad was an exception to this rule. Was, mind you. With the help of some gaming enthusiasts and professional gamers, the scene in Hyderabad has begun to heat up. We always wanted to see the multiplayer aspect of gaming become famous in Hyderabad. So one day, when we heard about the first two gaming cafés the city would have, we were like “Whoa!” and immediately hotfooted it to the heart of the city to this café called Orange Box. Yes, the name sounds weird, but this was the city’s first gaming centre after all. This is where we first realized how many gaming freaks were actually in Hyderabad. You can say we were transported to another world.
